Rising Oil Prices Trigger Losses in Indian Equity Markets

Indian stock indices declined as Brent crude oil prices exceeded $114 per barrel due to escalating Middle East tensions and stalled U.S.-Iran peace talks.

Indian equity markets experienced widespread losses as Brent crude oil prices climbed above $114 per barrel. Both the Sensex and Nifty 50 indices declined, with 12 of 16 sectors booking losses and IT stocks dropping 1.1%. The price surge stems from escalating tensions in the Middle East and fears of supply disruptions, compounded by a deadlock between the United States and Iran over the conditions of a peace deal.

Despite the volatility, the Government of India increased its imports of Middle Eastern crude to 2.8 million barrels per day in September, raising the region's share of total imports to 54%. During the same period, imports from Russia, which remains India's single largest supplier, fell by 14% to 1.8 million barrels per day.

Market analysts expect volatility to persist as long as diplomatic negotiations between the United States and Iran remain stalled.
