Nigerian Presidential Adviser Links Security Crisis to Foreign Influence

Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser on Policy Communication to President Bola Tinubu, stated that foreign interests and the infiltration of security agencies may be contributing to Nigeria's ongoing security crisis. Speaking on The Link Up Podcast, Bwala pointed to protests in northern Nigeria featuring Russian flags and referenced claims by U.S. Congressman Scott Perry that the Central Intelligence Agency funded Boko Haram and the Islamic State as evidence of external influence.

Bwala acknowledged that the possibility of terrorist agents infiltrating the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Police Force cannot be ruled out, noting that individual officers have been arrested for such links in the past. He compared this risk to global precedents, citing Edward Snowden's role as a U.S. national security contractor. He declined to provide specific details on current countermeasures, stating that the government is taking steps it wishes to keep confidential.

Addressing domestic failures, Bwala alleged that counterterrorism operations were previously hindered by a rivalry between the Nigerian Army and Nigerian Air Force during the administration of Muhammadu Buhari, specifically noting that requests for air cover were sometimes ignored. He contrasted these past failures with the current administration, asserting that operational coordination has since improved.
