Silver Transitions to Critical Mineral for Clean Energy

Silver is undergoing a global financial revaluation as industrial demand for clean energy and electronics outpaces limited mine supply.

Silver is experiencing a global financial revaluation as it transitions from a monetary metal to a critical mineral essential for national defense, advanced electronics, and clean energy. Demand from electric vehicle manufacturing, 5G infrastructure, and the solar photovoltaic industry has consistently outpaced annual mine supply since 2022. Because more than 70% of silver is produced as a byproduct of other metal mining, the ability to expand supply remains limited.

First Majestic Silver has positioned itself as a pure-play investment vehicle, with silver production accounting for 66% of its revenue. The company operates underground mines in Mexico and utilizes a proprietary minting operation called First Mint to sell silver directly to retail customers at a premium. In the second quarter, the company reported revenue of $415.5 million, marking a 57% year-over-year increase, with earnings per share of $0.22.

The United States Geological Survey highlights that the metal's indispensable physical properties, specifically its thermal and electrical conductivity, drive this industrial necessity. Along with First Majestic Silver, Hecla Mining and Pan American Silver are identified as primary vehicles for direct silver investment exposure.
