IMF Chief Says Argentina Will Repay Debt Like Greece

International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva indicated that Argentina is expected to repay its debt, drawing a comparison to Greece's economic trajectory.

International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva indicated on October 15, 2026, that Argentina is expected to repay its debt, comparing the country's trajectory to that of Greece. Speaking at a panel in Bangkok, Georgieva's remarks were interpreted by Argentine media as a signal that the country might repay its loans early.

Argentina currently owes the IMF approximately US$56.8 billion, which accounts for about 34% of all outstanding IMF credit. Economy Minister Luis Caputo responded to the comments by stating, "That is already happening," though reports vary on whether he referred to early repayment or a broader goal of ending dependence on the lender.

While the exchange signals confidence in President Javier Milei's economic program, the government has not announced a formal prepayment plan or date. The IMF and the Argentine Ministry of Economy remain engaged in negotiations for the third review of a 2025 loan, a process that requires a staff-level agreement and a Board vote before additional payouts are released.
