Electoral Commission Reports Surge in Candidate Abuse in England

The Electoral Commission reported a significant increase in abuse and intimidation targeting candidates during recent local and mayoral elections in England. A review conducted by the commission revealed that more than half of candidates from the Labour and Reform UK parties experienced harassment or threats. Women, disabled candidates, and people from minority ethnic backgrounds were the most frequent targets of these attacks.

Reported incidents included aggressive confrontations, spitting, and physical assaults. The severity of the abuse led one-third of affected candidates to consider withdrawing from future elections. Chief Executive Vijay Rangarajan warned of a dehumanization of political opponents and a trend where social media content triggers real-world harassment.

While 94% of voters expressed satisfaction with the voting process, the commission noted that over half of voters saw misinformation and 10% encountered deepfake material. In response, the commission recommended that political parties urge members to respect campaigners and that social media companies establish rapid response protocols to mitigate abuse.
