SpaceX AI Revenue Surpasses Starlink Amid Heavy Spending
Space Exploration Technologies Corp. reports its AI unit now leads in sales, though massive infrastructure spending and a 40% annual revenue decline strain finances.
Space Exploration Technologies Corp. reported that its artificial intelligence unit, Super Intelligence, has overtaken Starlink as the company's primary revenue driver. In the third quarter of 2026, Super Intelligence revenue grew 829% to $7.5 billion, while Starlink revenue rose 69% to $5.2 billion. Despite the sales lead, Starlink remains the more profitable segment, generating $2.3 billion in operating income compared to $431 million for the AI unit.
Financial data from the company's second public quarterly earnings report reveals significant strain. While the announcement initially triggered a 7% share price increase, overall revenue for the 2026 fiscal year is trending 40% lower than the previous year. The company has invested heavily in AI infrastructure, with capital expenditures totaling $48 billion over the first nine months of the year, including more than $16 billion in the most recent quarter.
Growth for the Starlink segment is currently constrained by geopolitical issues and limited market access in China and India, leaving the company heavily reliant on government contracts. Despite these pressures, Elon Musk projected that annual recurring revenue could reach between $500 billion and $1 trillion by the end of next year. This follows the company's record-breaking initial public offering in June, which valued the firm at over $2 trillion.
