UN Security Council Unanimously Condemns Drone Strike on UAE Nuclear Plant
The UN Security Council unanimously condemned a drone attack on the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the UAE that originated from Iraq.
The United Nations Security Council unanimously condemned a drone attack on the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the United Arab Emirates, calling it a flagrant violation of international law. The strike, which occurred earlier in May 2026, involved six drones launched from Iraq. One drone struck an electricity generator outside the plant's inner perimeter, igniting a fire. The Security Council warned that attacks on peaceful nuclear facilities endanger civilian lives, critical infrastructure, and the environment. Council members demanded an immediate and permanent end to all attacks on UAE civilians and infrastructure while reaffirming support for the UAE's sovereignty. UAE Ambassador Mohamed Abushahab briefed the council, characterizing the strike as a dangerous escalation driven by cross-border attacks and proxy networks. The International Atomic Energy Agency also voiced grave concern, with Director General Rafael Grossi stating that military activity threatening nuclear safety is unacceptable.
