Nigeria Police Deploy Security and Restrict Movement for Ekiti Election

The Nigeria Police Force deployed personnel to 2,545 polling units and imposed a movement restriction in Ekiti State to secure the June 20 governorship election.

The Nigeria Police Force completed security deployments on June 19, 2026, ahead of the Ekiti State governorship election scheduled for Saturday, June 20. Personnel and assets were stationed across 2,545 polling units, border communities, and critical infrastructure. To support these operations, the force activated a dedicated emergency response line and implemented a multi-layered security architecture intended to protect voters, officials, and election materials.

Supervising Deputy Inspector-General Mustapha Fayoade and Inspector-General Olatunji Rilwan Disu coordinated the deployment, emphasizing that officers were briefed on rules of engagement to ensure impartial and professional conduct. Fayoade urged political actors and the public to cooperate with security agencies to maintain a peaceful environment.

To prevent disruption by political thugs and criminal elements, the Ekiti State Police Command announced a total vehicular movement restriction from 12:00 AM to 6:00 PM on election day. The ban affects all private and commercial vehicles, motorcycles, and tricycles across state roads and inter-state highways. Exemptions were granted to accredited Independent National Electoral Commission officials, medical personnel, journalists, and students taking national exams. Additionally, the command prohibited VIPs with armed escorts and unauthorized vigilante groups from visiting polling units, limiting security authority to the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security.
