India and Panama Establish Strategic Maritime Partnership
India and Panama launched a maritime partnership in New Delhi focused on logistics, digital innovation, and global connectivity to enhance trade between Asia and Latin America.
Sarbananda Sonowal, India's Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, and Panamanian Foreign Minister Javier Martinez-Acha Vasquez established a new maritime partnership during bilateral talks in New Delhi on July 22, 2026. The agreement centers on five strategic pillars: logistics, shipping, maritime security, skill development, and digital transformation.
Minister Vasquez prioritized AI-driven smart port logistics and technical collaboration between the Panama Maritime Authority and India's Directorate General of Shipping. In response, Sonowal proposed a formal bilateral agreement on port development and maritime transportation, characterizing Panama as a natural gateway for India to access Latin America and the Caribbean.
To advance institutional cooperation, Sonowal invited Panama's Minister of Maritime Affairs to participate in India Maritime Week 2026. The partnership aims to combine Panama's logistics strengths with India's maritime capabilities to create more resilient global supply chains.
