West Bengal and Assam Launch Digital Census 2027 Enumeration

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari launched the optional online self-enumeration phase for Census 2027 on August 1, 2026. The digital process, running until August 15, allows citizens to submit information via a portal to generate an 11-digit ID for later verification. Adhikari, along with Governor R N Ravi, was among the first to submit details. He described the initiative as the country's first "100 per cent digital" Census and asserted that the data is legally protected for use in statistics and planning.

Adhikari attributed the start of the census in West Bengal to a "lackadaisical approach" by the previous Mamata Banerjee-led administration, claiming they ignored Union Government communications from February 2025. He further stated the census is distinct from illegal immigration issues. In Kolkata, the Municipal Corporation is using student census prefects to promote the digital tool.

Assam announced it will begin its self-enumeration phase on August 2, with the portal open until August 16. This will be followed by a Housing Census from August 17 to September 15 across 35 districts, though floods have delayed activities in Charaideo and Sivasagar. The process utilizes a 33-question survey available in 16 languages. Concurrently, Tamil Nadu began a month-long door-to-door houselisting exercise involving 1.15 lakh enumerators.
