Wall Street Projected to Reach Record $90 Billion Profit
New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli projects Wall Street profits will hit $90 billion by year-end 2026, driven by AI investments and global dealmaking.
Wall Street is projected to reach record profits of $90 billion by the end of 2026, according to a report from Thomas DiNapoli, the New York State Comptroller. The securities industry earned $45.9 billion in the first half of the year, representing a 51.3% increase over the same period in 2025.
This growth stems from a surge in global dealmaking and an artificial intelligence boom, with $407 billion invested in AI venture capital during the first six months of 2026. Notable activity included a $75 billion public offering by Space Exploration Technologies Corp. in June. These profits have significantly increased government revenues, contributing $7.8 billion to the New York City budget and $26.3 billion to state coffers.
Despite the windfall, the report warns of systemic risks. These include stubborn inflation and interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve, which raised target rates to 4% in September. Additional pressures include supply chain disruptions caused by the Iran war and aggressive deregulation of financial watchdogs. Specifically, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission has seen staffing cuts of over 20% due to federal administration policies.
