Rocket Lab Targets SpaceX with Neutron Rocket and Iridium Acquisition
Rocket Lab is expanding its launch capabilities and acquiring Iridium Communications to challenge SpaceX in the satellite internet and heavy-payload markets.
Rocket Lab is positioning itself as a long-term competitor to Space Exploration Technologies Corp. by expanding its launch capacity and entering the satellite internet market. The company has grown its revenue by approximately 870% since its 2021 public offering and currently maintains a backlog of $2.36 billion.
To challenge the market dominance of SpaceX, Rocket Lab plans to debut its Neutron rocket by early 2027, which will allow the company to compete for larger payloads. Additionally, Rocket Lab is finalizing the acquisition of Iridium Communications to establish a presence in the satellite internet sector, directly challenging SpaceX's Starlink service.
Despite this growth, analysts caution that low industry margins and consistent share sales could lead to stock dilution. While Rocket Lab maintains a lower price-to-sales ratio of 56 compared to SpaceX's 94, some market experts suggest the shares may be a stock to avoid at current prices.
