Fulton County Commissioners Clash Over AI-Generated Legislation

Fulton County Commissioner Dana Barrett used the AI-detection tool GPTZero to determine that four legislative proposals introduced by colleagues Marvin Arrington Jr. and Bob Ellis were likely written by artificial intelligence. The contested measures included proposals to limit public comment at commission meetings and abolish the county ethics board.

Barrett argued that using machines to write ethical guidelines creates a "can of worms" and risks unintended consequences due to a lack of critical thinking. In response, Arrington and Ellis defended their use of technology tools for research and refinement. Arrington asserted that public officials who fail to adopt AI are "behind the ball."

While a proposal regarding food insecurity failed a vote on Wednesday, Arrington and Ellis decided to hold their remaining ethics-related items for future meetings. Arrington announced plans to introduce a comprehensive county policy for AI use, noting that the policy itself was developed with AI assistance.
