Google Search Displays False Report of Sam Altman Death
Google corrected a false report in its search results claiming OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had died after malicious edits targeted Wikipedia.
Google displayed a false report on August 12, 2026, stating that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had died. The error appeared in the search engine's knowledge panels and was first identified by users on X and Reddit.
Investigation into the error revealed that Wikipedia had been targeted by disruptive edits on Wednesday. A false claim that Altman had been assassinated was posted at 9:47 a.m. UTC. Although the page was corrected by 10:29 a.m. UTC, subsequent malicious edits occurred before the site was fully restored.
Google acknowledged the error and stated it was not a manual change. The company explained that while it draws from hundreds of sources for its knowledge panels, Wikipedia is a commonly cited one, and the vandalism of public information sources can affect the information that appears in Search.
