UN Experts Condemn India's Crackdown on Youth Protests
United Nations experts demanded that India end excessive force and arbitrary detentions of thousands of peaceful protesters demonstrating against voter roll deletions and education policies.
United Nations experts called on the Government of India to stop using excessive force and arbitrary detentions against youth-led protests that have occurred over the last three months. The demonstrations, centered in New Delhi and other regions, target government decisions regarding the education system and the removal of 130 million people from voter rolls, a move primarily affecting Muslim minorities and Scheduled Castes and Tribes.
Law enforcement has reportedly detained over 7,000 individuals, including lawyers and journalists, using lathi charges and phone seizures. UN experts specifically highlighted allegations of gender-based abuse and sexual violence during these detentions. They further criticized the use of Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita to implement internet shutdowns and blanket bans on public gatherings.
The UN experts demanded an independent investigation into law enforcement conduct to ensure accountability and reparations for victims. They asserted that the crackdown reflects a broader pattern of violating international legal obligations regarding freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.
