AWS Launches Amazon Bio Discovery AI for Drug Development
Amazon Web Services released Amazon Bio Discovery, an agentic AI platform that accelerates pharmaceutical research and molecule generation through a lab-in-the-loop iterative process.
Amazon Web Services launched Amazon Bio Discovery at the AWS Life Sciences Symposium in New York. The agentic AI platform enables pharmaceutical researchers to use biological foundation models for molecule generation and analysis without requiring extensive programming skills. The system utilizes a lab-in-the-loop process, integrating with partners such as Twist Bioscience and Ginkgo Bioworks to synthesize and test candidate molecules, with the results fed back into the AI to refine future designs.
In a collaboration with Memorial Sloan Kettering, the platform accelerated the design of antibody molecules for pediatric cancer therapies. The AI agents generated nearly 300,000 antibody molecules, narrowing them down to 100,000 candidates for wet lab testing. AWS claims the platform can compress research timelines that previously took 18 months into a few weeks. Early adopters include Bayer, the Broad Institute, and Voyager Therapeutics.
Operating on a subscription model with a limited free trial, the platform positions Amazon as a competitor to AI health services from OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft, and Perplexity. Additionally, AWS, Boston Consulting Group, and Merck unveiled a separate AI platform during the same symposium focused on optimizing clinical trial site selection.
