EU Denies Boycotting Nigeria 2027 Election Observation

The European Union Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS has denied reports that it rejected an invitation to observe Nigeria's 2027 general elections. The delegation issued a clarification after media outlets and the Peoples' Democratic Party claimed the bloc declined the invitation due to worsening insecurity and the hostile treatment of officials following the 2023 polls. The EU dismissed these claims as "pure speculations."

EU Ambassador Gautier Mignot confirmed that the bloc accepted an April 17, 2026, invitation from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Instead of a full-scale observation mission, the EU will deploy an Electoral Expert Mission (EEM) consisting of two to four independent experts. This smaller team will assess the electoral process against international, regional, and national obligations and provide a final report with recommendations to the Nigerian government.

Mignot explained that the decision to field an EEM was based on annual resource allocations and partner country reviews rather than security concerns. The delegation emphasized that this decision will not impact the ongoing Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria project.
