AWS Shifts Financial Operations to AI First Mindset

Amazon Web Services is transitioning its internal financial operations toward an AI first mindset to move beyond basic productivity gains and rethink core business processes. John Felton, Senior Vice President and CFO of AWS, has directed employees to integrate AI into their daily workflows to identify operational improvements.

As part of this shift, the AWS pricing team replaced a complex 18-tab Excel model used for evaluating customer deals with an AI chatbot. This tool allows staff to explore pricing scenarios and break-even points using natural-language queries. In another operational change, a team deployed an AI agent to audit all customer contract payment terms against the company's payment system, eliminating a previous reliance on sampling.

Felton stated that while AI adoption remains uneven across the industry, corporate focus is shifting from cost-cutting toward using AI to create new revenue products and customer experiences.
