First British Citizen Fighting for Russia Killed in Ukraine

British citizen Bradley Townsend died on June 10 near Lyman, Donetsk, after joining Russian separatists in the invasion of Ukraine. The 33-year-old from Barnsley, Yorkshire, is believed to be the first British national to be killed while fighting for Russia. Reports indicate he was killed by a remote-controlled first-person-view drone.

Townsend left Britain in April and was granted Russian citizenship for his service. He joined other British defectors, including Ben Stimson and Aiden Minnis, citing a desire to repay historical support provided by Donbas miners to Yorkshire miners during the 1980s. While pro-Russian accounts praised him as a warrior, former friends in the UK suggested he was indoctrinated due to vulnerabilities involving addiction and mental health.

Former security minister Tom Tugendhat condemned the decision to join the Russian military, describing the action as criminal. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office is currently providing support to Townsend's family.
