Nigeria Partners to Integrate Digital Identity into Mining Sector

The Ministry of Solid Minerals Development and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) have established a strategic partnership to integrate digital identity management into Nigeria's solid minerals sector. During a meeting in Abuja, Minister Dele Alake and NIMC Director-General Abisoye Coker-Odusote agreed to utilize digital identity infrastructure to improve regulatory oversight and curb insecurity.

The collaboration specifically targets the tracking of both legal and illegal mining operations to sanitize the value chain. By distinguishing legitimate operators from illegal miners, the government aims to enhance regulatory compliance and strengthen the implementation of Community Development Agreements between mining companies and their host communities.

Both leaders noted that the recently enacted National Identity Management Commission Act 2026 provides the necessary legal framework to accelerate secure identity verification and inter-agency data integration. This technological integration is intended to provide evidence-based data for policymaking, improve law enforcement capacity, and promote investment within the mining sector.
