Lawyer Defends Peter Obi After Wife's Luxury Bag Sparks Backlash

Activist lawyer Maduabuchi Idam defended Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi following social media backlash over a luxury handbag owned by Obi's wife, Margaret Brownson. The Hermès bag is reported to be worth approximately £131,938.81, or about 200 million naira.

Idam characterized the purchase as an "extravagant expression at its peak" and described it as "morally distasteful" in the context of Nigeria's current economic struggles. However, he argued that extravagance funded by personal resources is not the same as corruption.

Idam stated that because Obi is generally believed to have accumulated his wealth legitimately, his wife has the prerogative to spend those private funds as she chooses. He maintained that investigations are only warranted if evidence emerges that public funds were used for the purchase, otherwise viewing the controversy as a distraction from substantive issues.
