Charles Schwab to Launch Tax-Aware Long/Short Investment Strategy

Charles Schwab plans to introduce a proprietary long/short strategy to help wealthy investors shield capital gains from taxes through enhanced tax-loss harvesting.

The Charles Schwab Corporation plans to launch a proprietary tax-aware long/short investment strategy designed for wealthy investors seeking to shield capital gains from taxes. CEO Rick Wurster announced the upcoming offering during a quarterly earnings call, stating that the product will extend the firm's existing direct indexing capabilities.

These strategies utilize leverage on both long and short positions to increase potential tax-loss harvesting opportunities. The move follows a massive industry-wide surge in such products, with total assets growing from $2 billion in 2022 to more than $170 billion this year. Wurster did not provide a specific launch date but confirmed the company's intent to provide the offering.

The expansion comes as the Internal Revenue Service and the United States Department of the Treasury increase scrutiny of sophisticated tax avoidance methods used by high-net-worth individuals. The Treasury Department has adopted a more aggressive stance on these strategies, while the IRS recently issued a notice regarding the use of complex ETF strategies to avoid capital gains taxes.
