Brussels South Charleroi Airport to Close for 11-Week Redevelopment

The Brussels South Charleroi Airport in Belgium will suspend all air traffic for 11 weeks from August 15 to October 31, 2028. The total closure is necessary because the facility operates with a single 3,200-metre runway, making partial operations impossible during construction. The airport is scheduled to reopen on November 1, 2028.

SOWAER, the airport's infrastructure company, is managing the 50 million euro redevelopment project. The works include a complete reconstruction of the runway alongside upgrades to taxiway markings, aircraft parking stands, drainage systems, airfield lighting, and terminal areas. To minimize the length of the disruption, the company plans to carry out various construction projects simultaneously.

The closure is expected to affect more than two million passengers. Ryanair and Wizz Air will be the most heavily impacted carriers, as Ryanair currently operates more than 80% of the flights at the hub.
