Scope Ratings Analyst Warns of Bond Market Crisis Risks
Eiko Sievert of Scope Ratings identifies central bank intervention as the primary marker of a bond market crisis amid rising US and European debt.
Lead US sovereign analyst Eiko Sievert stated that a bond market crisis is confirmed when central banks are forced to intervene to stabilize markets. Speaking Wednesday, Sievert identified central bank firefighting as the primary indicator of such a crisis, specifically citing the European Central Bank utilizing its Transmission Protection Instrument as a sign of instability.
In the United States, Sievert noted that Federal Reserve interference in fiscal matters to maintain inflation and employment targets would signal a failure of fiscal policy. While current market conditions are unsettling, with government bond yields reaching their highest levels since 2008, Sievert highlighted long-term risks including high debt-to-GDP projections in France and Austria.
Sievert specifically pointed to US public debt surpassing $40 trillion and the upcoming January debt ceiling threshold of $41.1 trillion as potential catalysts for market nervousness.
