Projections Estimate 2027 Social Security COLA Increase Up to 3.8%

The Senior Citizens League and other analysts project a 2027 Social Security cost-of-living adjustment between 3.6% and 3.8% based on current inflation data.

Projections for the 2027 Social Security cost-of-living adjustment indicate a potential increase in monthly benefits for retired Americans. The Senior Citizens League estimates a 3.8% increase, which would raise the maximum monthly retirement benefit to a record $5,378 and increase the average worker's payment by approximately $79.

Other estimates vary slightly, with AARP projecting 3.6% and analyst Katarina Johnson-Thompson suggesting a middle-ground figure of 3.7%. These projections are influenced by inflation volatility and energy prices linked to conflict between the United States and Iran.

The official adjustment is calculated using the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers data from July, August, and September. The Bureau of Labor Statistics will release the final September data on October 14, after which the Social Security Administration will announce the official 2027 adjustment.
