Liberia Celebrates 179th Independence Anniversary in Buchanan

Liberia celebrated its 179th Independence Anniversary on July 26, 2026, with a two-day event that began with a church service and ended with a presidential speech. In a departure from tradition, the celebrations were held in Buchanan rather than the capital of Monrovia, a move driven by Senate President Protem Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence to decentralize the event.

During the festivities, Elias Shoniyin issued a call for national renewal, unity, and integrity, characterizing the country as a symbol of Black sovereignty. Shoniyin addressed Liberia's history of civil conflict and corruption, noting that the reburial of former presidents Samuel Kanyon Doe and William R. Tolbert Jr. was a necessary step toward genuine reconciliation.

Shoniyin urged both citizens and government officials to prioritize public service over selfishness. He argued that this shift in priority is essential to combat institutional decay, unemployment, and persistent poverty across the nation.
