Mazda CEO Details Electric MX-5 and New Flagship Hero Car

Masahiro Moro confirmed the next-generation MX-5 will support electric power and announced plans for a high-end flagship hero car to embody brand values.

Masahiro Moro, CEO of Mazda Motor Corporation, announced that the next-generation MX-5 roadster, codenamed NE, is being engineered to accommodate electric power. The move aims to ensure the model remains viable against future regulatory roadblocks. Expected by 2028 at the earliest, the vehicle may also include potential hybridization and a 2.5-liter Skyactiv-Z four-cylinder engine.

Moro stated that engineers are targeting a total vehicle weight between 1,000 kg and 1,200 kg. To achieve this despite the addition of batteries, the company is focusing on a lighter underlying structure rather than utilizing exotic materials such as carbon fiber.

Additionally, Moro revealed plans to develop a high-end hero car. This flagship model is intended to embody the brand's values and may be largely hand-built. Moro noted that this exclusive vehicle is not intended for high sales volumes.
