Airbnb to Launch Specialized AI Travel Agent in 2027
Airbnb, Inc. will release a specialized AI travel agent in early 2027 to integrate all travel verticals and manage bookings natively within its app.
Airbnb, Inc. plans to launch a specialized AI travel agent in the first half of 2027 to assist users with researching, planning, and booking trips. Announced during the company's Q3 2026 earnings call and shareholder letter, the tool will utilize a post-chat-based interface to generate real-time visual elements, including maps, calendars, and itineraries, rather than relying on traditional text-based chatbots.
CEO Brian Chesky stated the agent will eventually operate outside the walls of Airbnb to integrate every vertical of travel. This strategy aims to enable native bookings for hotels and car rentals directly within the app, reducing reliance on external partners to increase revenue share and centralize customer service. The announcement followed strong Q3 financial results, with revenue growing 19% to approximately $4.9 billion.
Addressing the rise of general-purpose AI, Chesky dismissed agents like Meta Platforms, Inc.'s Muse as a threat, noting that bookings from such tools are very non-material compared to the nearly half a million daily bookings the company processes. While he views these agents as an opportunity for discovery, Chesky argued that travel is an aspirational experience that users prefer to plan themselves, necessitating a specialized tool tailored to the guest experience.
