Yemeni Army Launches Massive Offensive Against Houthi Positions

The Yemeni army conducted over 1,500 operations against Houthi forces, reporting thousands of casualties in the heaviest fighting since the 2022 truce.

The Government of Yemen has launched a major military escalation against Houthi positions, marking the most significant fighting since the April 2022 truce. In a surge that began in early July, government forces conducted over 1,500 operations across multiple fronts, including Saada, Al-Jawf, Marib, Al-Bayda, Lahj, and Taiz. On October 1, the army carried out 468 operations across the eastern, Al-Bayda, and Al-Mansoura fronts, while simultaneously launching six airstrikes in the Al-Akboush area and Hayfan district of Taiz province.

Major General Majed Abdullah al-Nazili reported that these operations killed or injured hundreds of militia members and destroyed numerous vehicles and equipment. Overall, the government claims nearly 3,000 Houthi casualties and the deaths of four Iranian specialists. Fighting has also intensified around the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait and routes connecting government-held areas to the southern coast.

Major General al-Nazili accused the Houthis of violating international humanitarian law by targeting civilians and educational facilities. While the Houthis have not commented on these claims, the United Nations reports that the escalation has affected over 130,000 people and caused civilian deaths.
