Falkland Islands Residents Demand Referendum on Salmon Farming

Residents of the Falkland Islands are calling for a referendum to decide the future of a proposed large-scale salmon farming project. The proposal, led by Unity Marine, a joint venture between local firm Fortuna and Danish company F-land ApS, aims to farm 50,000 tonnes of salmon annually across 16 locations. If approved, it would become the archipelago's largest industrial inshore development.

Opposition organized under the group Salmon Free Falklands argues that the current government consultation process is biased and relies on unverifiable industry data. Conversely, government reports and proponents suggest the project could contribute £35 million annually to the economy, representing approximately 11% of the GDP.

The Government of the Falkland Islands maintains a neutral stance, stating that reports are meant to inform public discussion through various scenarios rather than grant final approvals. This renewed debate follows a 2022 decision to reject the farms, which was later quashed after Unity Marine won a judicial review.
