Starbucks to Open First International Tech Hub in Chennai

Starbucks signed a memorandum of understanding with the Government of Tamil Nadu to establish a global capability centre in Chennai, India. This facility marks the company's first corporate technology hub located outside the United States, expanding its global operations beyond existing sites in Seattle and Nashville.

The new hub is expected to create approximately 800 roles focusing on software development, finance, and research and development. Starbucks cited Chennai's infrastructure, engineering ecosystem, and deep technology talent pool as the primary reasons for the selection. The company plans to offer a competitive median salary of Rs 35 lakh per annum, with hiring phased according to business needs.

The investment aligns with the Special Scheme to Promote GCCs (2024–2027), a Tamil Nadu government initiative that provides payroll subsidies for high-paying roles to attract Fortune 1000 and Forbes Global 2000 entities. This corporate technology hub will operate independently from the company's existing retail joint venture in India.
