Melat Kiros Rejects Communist Label Amid GOP Attacks

Democratic congressional nominee Melat Kiros dismissed Republican concerns regarding communist influence within the Democratic Socialists of America as noise during an appearance on PBS's Firing Line. Kiros, who won the Democratic primary for Colorado's 1st Congressional District by defeating 15-term Representative Diana DeGette, denied being a communist and characterized the DSA as a big tent organization.

While Kiros advocates for a 32-hour workweek and Medicare-for-all, she explicitly rejected specific DSA platform goals, including the defunding of police and the abolition of the Senate. She suggested that Republican attacks stem from a fear that the organization's economic populism is gaining traction with voters.

Republican National Committee Press Secretary Natalie Baldassarre countered by asserting that the DSA platform follows Karl Marx's communist playbook. Baldassarre claimed the organization seeks to abolish government branches and police forces, stating that Republicans would continue to expose the radical nature of Democratic candidates leading up to the November election.
