Amazon Invests $50 Billion for 5% Stake in OpenAI
Amazon.com completed a $50 billion investment in OpenAI to secure a minority stake and expand cloud infrastructure agreements through Amazon Web Services.
Amazon.com, Inc. completed a $50 billion investment in OpenAI, acquiring a roughly 5% stake in the company. The transaction follows an April 27 agreement revision by Microsoft Corporation that removed exclusivity restrictions, allowing rival cloud providers to invest in the AI research organization.
Under a partnership established in February, Amazon Web Services (AWS) became the exclusive third-party cloud distributor for OpenAI Frontier. OpenAI committed to utilizing approximately 2 gigawatts of Trainium capacity as part of this arrangement. To further support the collaboration, the two companies expanded an existing $38 billion AWS agreement by an additional $100 billion over eight years.
Microsoft remains the primary cloud partner, retaining first-shipment rights on Azure and a non-exclusive license to OpenAI products through 2032. However, the new deal enables Amazon to increase AWS utilization and integrate Trainium into frontier-model workloads. To facilitate these infrastructure investments, Amazon increased its planned 2026 capital spending to $220 billion.
