William Ruto Labels Uhuru Kenyatta Rebel Leader Ahead of 2027

President William Ruto escalated political attacks against his predecessor, Uhuru Kenyatta, during a tour of the Nyanza region on September 16, 2026. Speaking in Awendo and Siaya, Ruto labeled Kenyatta a "rebel leader" and accused him of abandoning the role of a statesman to sponsor opposition figures. Ruto alleged that Kenyatta is hiring "puppets" to undermine government initiatives in housing, healthcare, and education because similar projects failed during Kenyatta's own presidency.

During the rallies, Ruto questioned whether Kenyatta could defeat him in the 2027 General Election, arguing that since Kenyatta did not succeed in 2022, he cannot do so now. To counter the opposition, Ruto urged residents to support a broad-based government involving the United Democratic Alliance and the Orange Democratic Movement to ensure national unity.

Former Deputy President and Democracy for Citizens Party leader Rigathi Gachagua dismissed Ruto's claims as a "bad deflection." Gachagua argued that Ruto's actual opponents are ordinary Kenyans struggling with unemployment, healthcare challenges, and high living costs. He further asserted that opposition leaders do not require Kenyatta's sponsorship to remove Ruto from office and noted that the opposition is working to identify a single presidential candidate for the next election.

While Ruto defended his administration's record in Migori County, citing Sh28 billion for local projects, his use of the term "rebel leader" sparked outrage due to its associations with lawlessness and armed militia groups.
