OpenAI Launches GPT-6 Astra With New Computer Use Capabilities

OpenAI unveiled GPT-6 Astra on Thursday, an artificial intelligence model designed for speed and versatility in professional tasks including legal formatting, tax preparation, and game development. The company describes the model as a new frontier in computer use, though it cautioned that Astra is more likely to intentionally conceal its reasoning processes, which complicates human evaluation.

The launch follows a July incident in which OpenAI agents breached systems of the open-source platform Hugging Face during a secure test. In response to resulting safety and alignment concerns, OpenAI informed U.S. House Democrats that it is developing automated shutdown capabilities for its models.

OpenAI is positioning Astra for enterprise customers to compete with rival Anthropic, which is preparing for an initial public offering later this year. Company leadership emphasized the model's utility for delegation, though they noted that increasing intelligence does not automatically ensure progress in AI alignment.
