Nikkei 225 Falls as Japan Unemployment and Inflation Rise
The Nikkei 225 Index dropped 0.81 percent on Friday following reports of higher-than-expected unemployment and consumer price increases in Japan.
The Nikkei 225 Index fell 557.65 points, or 0.81 percent, to 68,399.07 on Friday, erasing gains from the previous two trading sessions. The decline was led by losses in the automotive sector and index heavyweights, with SoftBank Group shares dropping more than 5 percent, while Toyota and Honda Motor Company both lost approximately 2 percent. Fast Retailing also saw a decline of nearly 2 percent.
Market pressure followed economic data from the MIAC showing Japan's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose to 2.5 percent in August, surpassing the 2.4 percent forecast. Inflationary pressure also increased, as both overall consumer prices and core CPI rose 2.7 percent year-on-year in September, exceeding expectations of 2.5 percent and 2.4 percent.
Some tech and industrial stocks, including Advantest and Mitsui Kinzoku, managed to post gains. The downturn occurred despite modest gains on Wall Street on Thursday, though major European indices also experienced notable declines.
