Mamdani Fires NYC Sheriff Miranda, Appoints Whistleblower Raymond
Mayor Zohran Mamdani fired Sheriff Anthony Miranda amid cash-seizure scandals and appointed NYPD whistleblower Edwin Raymond as his replacement.
Zohran Mamdani fired New York City Sheriff Anthony Miranda on Thursday, May 28, 2026, and appointed former NYPD Lieutenant Edwin Raymond as his replacement, sweeping out a holdover from the Eric Adams administration amid multiple scandals. Mamdani also dismissed First Deputy Sheriff Warren Glover and executive assistant Isabella Geroux.
Miranda's tenure was plagued by a Department of Investigation probe that uncovered over $100,000 in cash inside safes and shipping containers at the sheriff's headquarters in Long Island City. The discovery contradicted Miranda's claims that deputies did not collect money during raids of unlicensed cannabis shops. The office also faced scrutiny over uncertified training instructors at the sheriff's academy and allegations of a hostile work environment.
The NYC Deputy Sheriffs Benevolent Association welcomed the leadership change, citing mismanagement and malfeasance under Miranda. The union had previously called for his resignation.
Edwin Raymond, the new appointee, is a retired NYPD lieutenant known for leading a 2015 federal lawsuit against the NYPD alleging the use of arrest quotas targeting people of color. The son of Haitian immigrants, Raymond previously ran for City Council in 2020 and authored a book on policing reform. Mamdani praised Raymond as a principled public servant committed to justice and accountability. Raymond said he intends to build a safer, fairer, and more accountable city.
