Japan Services Prices Hit Fastest Growth Since June 2024

The Bank of Japan reported a 3.7% annual rise in services producer prices for August, signaling continued inflationary pressure in the service sector.

The Bank of Japan reported that the services producer price index rose 3.7% in August from a year earlier, the fastest annual increase since June 2024. This figure represents an acceleration from the 3.6% gain recorded in July.

Rising costs for freight, advertising, and rental leases drove the increase. The central bank monitors these indices to determine whether companies are passing higher labor costs on to consumers through service prices.

Having already raised interest rates to a 31-year high of 1.25% this month, the Bank of Japan indicated it is prepared to further increase borrowing costs. This stance aims to ensure that inflation does not overshoot the bank's target.
