NATO Ambassadors Visit Seoul to Expand Defense Cooperation
NATO ambassadors from 30 countries visited Seoul to discuss regional security and procure defense technology before traveling to Japan.
A delegation of ambassadors from 30 NATO member states visited Seoul from April 14 to April 16, 2026, to strengthen defense cooperation and regional security ties. During the visit, the envoys met with Foreign Minister Cho Hyun-taek and Vice Foreign Minister Jeong Yeon-doo to discuss South Korea's security priorities, specifically North Korea's nuclear threats and Russia's war in Ukraine.
The delegation toured defense industry sites and met with representatives from 13 South Korean defense firms. European allies are seeking to replenish military stockpiles using Korean howitzers, tanks, and air defense platforms. Both parties agreed to expand their partnership into space and advanced breakthrough technologies, noting the increasing security links between the Indo-Pacific and European-Atlantic regions.
Following the engagements in Seoul, the delegation planned to travel to Japan to further review the Indo-Pacific political landscape and explore additional defense industry opportunities. These diplomatic efforts occur as some NATO members, including Britain and France, have indicated they will not participate in a United States-led plan to blockade the Strait of Hormuz amid conflict between the U.S., Israel, and Iran.
