Germany Raises Russian Sabotage Threat to Second-Highest Level
The Bundeswehr raised the threat level of Russian sabotage to significant following the discovery of explosive drones and intelligence operations at military sites.
The Bundeswehr has raised the threat level of Russian sabotage against its personnel and installations to significant, the second-highest level on its internal scale. This reclassification follows a series of security breaches, including the mid-September discovery of a crashed drone equipped with high explosives near the Wunstorf air base in Lower Saxony and a failed August attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport targeting a Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft.
Internal military analysis concludes that Russia has crossed a red line by deploying weaponized drones capable of causing physical damage or casualties. Beyond drone attacks, German authorities identified other suspected Russian intelligence activities, including drone overflights of an Arrow 3 missile defense facility in Saxony-Anhalt and the discovery of a concealed camera at a strategic railway station in Minden.
In response, the German Defence Ministry is implementing enhanced security measures, such as increased guard patrols and infrared surveillance systems. Military officials assert that Moscow aims to disrupt equipment deliveries to Ukraine to weaken political and public support for Kyiv. The Federal Government of Russia has denied all involvement, with its ambassador to Berlin calling the Leipzig allegations absurd and a provocation.
