House Committee Advances Six Nuclear Energy Expansion Bills
The House Energy and Commerce Committee unanimously advanced six bills to accelerate domestic nuclear energy expansion by streamlining regulatory and licensing processes.
The U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee unanimously advanced six nuclear-industry bills on September 2, 2026, to accelerate the expansion of domestic nuclear energy. The legislation focuses on streamlining regulatory processes and increasing infrastructure capacity through several key measures.
Among the advanced bills, H.R. 3978 simplifies licensing for spent fuel recycling facilities, while H.R. 9612 allows enrichment plants to begin construction before final licensing is complete. To further reduce delays, H.R. 5549 removes mandatory hearings in cases where no affected interests request them. Other measures include reforming the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards and increasing pay for senior NRC executives to improve staff retention.
Additionally, the legislation requires the United States Department of Energy to publish safety analyses and authorizations within 72 hours to increase transparency. While some Democratic members, including Ranking Member Frank Pallone, had previously raised concerns regarding safety oversight and the specifics of the enrichment bill, no opposing votes were recorded during the committee process.
