Anthropic Donates $20 Million to Back AI Regulation Candidates
Anthropic donated $20 million to Public First Action to support political candidates favoring AI safety regulations and state-level oversight.
Anthropic PBC donated $20 million to Public First Action, a political advocacy group supporting candidates who favor artificial intelligence safety regulations and transparency mandates. This marks the AI lab's first known political intervention and specifically supports candidates who oppose federal efforts to override state-level AI rules, including a December executive order issued by Donald Trump.
The donation sets up a direct financial conflict with OpenAI Inc. and venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz LLC. These rivals support Leading the Future, a billionaire-backed super PAC that has raised over $125 million to promote candidates favoring lighter regulation. While Anthropic advocates for export controls on advanced chips and federal standards that permit stricter state laws, the OpenAI-backed network argues that stringent rules stifle innovation and hinder the United States' competitive edge against China.
Public First Action is utilizing the funds for ad campaigns supporting Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn in her bid for Tennessee governor and Senator Pete Ricketts in his reelection campaign in Nebraska. This political push occurs as Anthropic faces friction with the Trump administration and a dispute with the U.S. Department of Defense over the use of AI for autonomous weapons and surveillance, which has stalled a $200 million contract.
