Aeroméxico Refunds Passenger After Advocacy Intervention
Aeroméxico issued a $1,360 refund to a passenger after a consumer advocacy group cited U.S. Department of Transportation regulations regarding significant schedule changes.
Aeroméxico issued a full refund of $1,360 to passenger Allison Turpen after initially refusing to reimburse her for a rescheduled flight. Turpen, who was traveling with a newborn, requested the refund because a schedule change created an overnight layover exceeding eight hours in Mexico City during her trip from Washington, D.C., to Oaxaca.
The airline originally denied the request, claiming that its transportation contract stipulates flights are subject to changes or cancellations. The situation changed after the nonprofit organization Elliott Advocacy intervened on behalf of the passenger. The advocacy team cited U.S. Department of Transportation regulations, which mandate refunds for significant international schedule changes exceeding six hours.
Following the intervention and the citation of federal regulations, Aeroméxico reversed its decision and processed the full reimbursement to Turpen.
