Apple iPhone 18 Pro C2 Modem Enables Automatic Satellite Connectivity

Apple is developing a major satellite connectivity upgrade for the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a rumored foldable model, powered by a custom C2 modem that replaces Qualcomm chips in Pro models. The C2 modem supports 5G NR-NTN technology, which treats low-Earth-orbit satellites as cell towers and enables automatic fallback to satellite connectivity when cellular signals weaken. Unlike current systems that require users to manually point devices at the sky for emergency SOS, the new system would switch to satellite in the background, working from pockets, cars, or indoors. Apple aims to transition satellite use from emergency-only services to everyday utilities, potentially supporting high-speed internet, voice calls, and video streaming.

The C2 modem also enables a privacy feature called "Limit Precise Location," which lets users share approximate rather than exact location data with mobile carriers. This feature was previously unavailable on Pro models due to their reliance on Qualcomm hardware, though it existed on lower-profile devices like the iPhone Air and iPhone 16e. Carrier support remains limited: in the United States, only Boost Mobile currently supports the feature, while major carriers Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile have not yet adopted it.

Additional rumored specifications include the A20 Pro chipset built on a 2nm process, under-display Face ID that reduces the Dynamic Island size, a larger battery, and a triple 48MP camera system with a wider aperture telephoto lens and manual aperture or mechanical iris. Apple currently partners with Globalstar for satellite features, though speculation continues about a potential deal with SpaceX's Starlink, which already has limited texting capability on iPhones through T-Mobile. The devices are expected to be unveiled at Apple's annual fall launch event in September 2026.
