Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir Elected President of Bangladesh
Bangladesh's Parliament elected Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as the 23rd president on Thursday, defeating Oli Ahmed in the first contested presidential vote since 1991.
Bangladesh's Parliament elected Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Secretary General of the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party, as the country's 23rd president on Thursday. Alamgir won the parliamentary vote 255 to 88, defeating Oli Ahmed, the candidate for a Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance. This marked the first contested presidential election in Bangladesh since 1991.
The election follows the resignation of former president Mohammed Shahabuddin, a close ally of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who stepped down last month on health grounds. Alamgir, a veteran opposition figure and former local government minister who faced numerous arrests under the previous administration, is expected to be sworn in on Friday evening. While the presidency is largely ceremonial, he will serve as head of state and commander-in-chief of the armed forces.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party returned to power in February following the 2024 fall of the Awami League government, with Tarique Rahman currently serving as prime minister. Following the announcement, the Government of China congratulated Alamgir and expressed a desire for a shared future in the new era.
