South Africa Suspends PIC CEO Following Corruption Probe

Public Investment Corporation CEO Patrick Dlamini was suspended after appointing PwC to investigate a R400 million payout involving a Lanseria transaction.

The Public Investment Corporation suspended its CEO, Patrick Dlamini, after he appointed PwC to investigate a R400 million payout related to a Lanseria transaction. Dlamini commissioned the professional services firm to determine if malfeasance had occurred during the transaction.

Around the same time, David Masondo, the Deputy Finance Minister and chair of the PIC board, referred the matter to the Special Investigating Unit. The timing of these actions has led critics to claim that Dlamini was punished for his proactive efforts to uncover corruption, while Masondo's political maneuvers were rewarded.

These events have raised concerns regarding political interference and state capture within the asset manager. The situation follows previous recommendations from the Mpati commission, which advised the removal of politically connected figures from leadership roles at the PIC to protect the institution's independence.
