Saritha Komatireddy Challenges Letitia James in New York AG Debate

Republican candidate Saritha Komatireddy accused incumbent Attorney General Letitia James of dereliction of duty during a campaign debate and in a faux public indictment.

Republican candidate Saritha Komatireddy launched a series of attacks against incumbent New York Attorney General Letitia James, culminating in a heated campaign debate on Thursday. Prior to the event, Komatireddy released a 52-count faux public indictment alleging that James neglected issues such as homelessness, violent crime, and Medicaid fraud to focus on prosecuting Donald Trump.

During the debate, Komatireddy, a former federal prosecutor, claimed that criminal convictions by the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit dropped from 97 in 2018 to as few as 8 or 19 in 2024. She further criticized James for mishandling the Cornell sexual assault case, failing to protect Jewish New Yorkers from antisemitism, and maintaining a gun seizure record inferior to that of New Jersey. Komatireddy pledged to uphold state laws, including abortion access, regardless of personal belief.

Letitia James defended her record by citing her empathy in the Cornell case and her ties to the Jewish community. She repeatedly dismissed Komatireddy as a "Trump puppet." In one exchange regarding prediction markets, James was recorded stating that "you don’t have to look at the facts and the law."

Despite the challenges, a Siena Research Institute poll shows James maintaining a 13-point lead in the race, polling at 52 percent compared to Komatireddy's 39 percent.
