Airwallex Pivots to Autonomous Finance Amid Regulatory Scrutiny
Airwallex is shifting toward autonomous finance and expanding globally after raising $320 million, despite calls for a U.S. investigation into its China ties.
Airwallex is pivoting its business model from cross-border payments toward autonomous finance, launching an automated bookkeeping system called T:0 and an agentic consumer wallet named Ari. The fintech company recently secured $320 million in a Series H funding round led by Addition, which brings its valuation to $11 billion.
While the company aims to be IPO-ready by the end of 2026, President Lucy Liu stated it is "not the best time" for a public offering because of market complexities. To support its growth, the firm established global co-headquarters in Singapore and San Francisco and is expanding operations into Mexico, Brazil, South Korea, and the United States.
This expansion coincides with increasing regulatory pressure. U.S. Senator Tom Cotton has called for a CFIUS investigation into the company's alleged ties to China. Additionally, the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre has ordered an external audit of the firm over suspected noncompliance with anti-money-laundering regulations.
