Governor Brian Kemp Suspends Georgia Fuel Taxes Amid Price Spikes

Governor Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency on September 28, 2026, to combat surging fuel prices driven by global market volatility and supply disruptions. The executive order suspends the state's motor fuel excise tax for 30 days, effective from 12:01 a.m. on September 29 through October 29. This action removes a tax of 33.3 cents per gallon for gasoline and 37.3 cents per gallon for diesel, as average state prices reached $4.19 and $6.24 per gallon, respectively.

To further stabilize the cost of consumer staples like groceries, the order suspends state weight and size limits on commercial freight vehicles on state-maintained roads, excluding interstates. Qualifying vehicles must obtain permits from the Georgia Department of Public Safety, though bridge weight limits remain in effect. The order also prohibits price gouging on motor fuel and other essential goods and services.

State legislative leaders and the Agriculture Commissioner supported the move, emphasizing the need for relief for families and farmers during the fall harvest. Governor Kemp noted that he has utilized similar tax suspensions in the past to provide relief during energy cost spikes.
