OpenAI Shuts Down Atlas Browser to Launch ChatGPT Work

OpenAI is discontinuing its Atlas web browser on August 9 to integrate its AI agent capabilities into a new ChatGPT Work productivity app and Chrome extension.

OpenAI announced it will shut down its standalone AI-powered desktop browser, Atlas, on August 9, 2026. Launched in October 2025, the browser is being deprecated less than a year after its release as the company shifts from a standalone browser toward an ecosystem where browsing is a feature within broader AI tools.

The company is migrating Atlas's agentic capabilities into several new offerings, including a Chrome extension for summarizing articles and performing multi-step web tasks, and a new workplace productivity agent called ChatGPT Work. Available for macOS and Windows, ChatGPT Work focuses on AI agents capable of managing repetitive computer tasks, file management, and background operations. Additionally, OpenAI introduced Sites, a feature within the ChatGPT app that allows users to generate personal web apps like dashboards and project trackers.

This strategic pivot follows a directive from former CEO of Applications Fidji Simo to reduce side projects, a move that also led to the shutdown of the Sora AI video-generation tool. Simo has since stepped down to become a part-time advisor due to chronic illness. Simultaneously, OpenAI released its latest flagship model, GPT-5.6, which Microsoft will integrate into its 365 Copilot tools for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
